1 Where is Cap Tien Temple?
Cap Tien Temple is located in Dong Xa commune, Van Don district, Quang Ninh province, near Bai Tu Long Bay and belongs to the Cua Ong Temple relic complex. Upon arriving here, the temple impressed me with its prime location "leaning against the mountain and facing the water"—backed by the majestic Tien Mountain and looking out over the poetic blue sea, creating a sacred and serene atmosphere.
Today, Cap Tien Temple is a familiar stop for travelers who love spiritual tourism in Quang Ninh, especially during early spring. Its ancient ambiance, picturesque landscape, and sacred legends make it one of the most famous temples in the Northeast region.

2 History and spiritual significance of the temple
When researching Cap Tien Temple, I learned that the temple is also known as Co Be Cua Suot Temple. The temple is believed to have been built during the Tran Dynasty, associated with the legend of the daughter of Grand Prince Hung Nhuong Tran Quoc Tang.
According to folklore, after her passing, the locals built a temple to commemorate her merits. By the Nguyen Dynasty, the temple also co-worshipped an mandarin official who made significant contributions to taking care of the people's lives and renovating the temple.
In terms of spiritual significance, I feel that Cap Tien Temple is a sanctuary where locals and visitors come to offer incense and pray for peace, health, good fortune, prosperity, and safe sea voyages.

3 Guide on how to get to Cap Tien Temple
Having visited Cap Tien Temple multiple times, I would like to suggest the most convenient way to get there. The temple is situated in Van Don, Quang Ninh, approximately 2 km from Cua Ong Temple and about 8 km from Cai Rong town center.
If traveling from Hanoi, you can take the Hanoi – Hai Phong – Ha Long – Van Don expressway, covering a distance of about 209-220 km, which takes around 3 hours by car.
For those who enjoy experiential journeys, riding a motorbike is also an exciting choice because the coastal route in Quang Ninh is quite scenic. From Ha Long, travel about 50-60 km further to reach the Van Don area. As you near Cua Ong Temple, continue to the foot of Van Don II Bridge, turn right, and drive for about 400 m to arrive at Cap Tien Temple.
4 Unmissable activities when visiting Cap Tien Temple
4.1 Explore the temple's architectural works
Regarding architecture, the main temple covers an area of about 102 m², constructed in the shape of the Han character "Dinh" (丁), comprising a front hall (bai duong) and an inner sanctuary (hau cung). This is a familiar architectural layout in traditional places of worship in Northern Vietnam.
In addition to the main temple, the relic site also features Son Trang Grotto and Tien Well (Fairy Well). These elements form a harmonious visiting space, combining spiritual elements with natural scenery for sightseeing and photography.
What I love about Cap Tien Temple is that its space is not overly imposing, but rather carries an ancient and tranquil vibe. Backed by the mountain and overlooking the bay, the temple embodies a beauty harmonious with nature and is very suitable to include in your spiritual travel itinerary in Van Don.

4.2 Offer incense to pray for peace
When visiting Cap Tien Temple, I often offer incense at the main temple to pray for peace, health, good fortune, and prosperity. This is the most important activity when visiting the temple, especially during early spring. Cap Tien Temple is part of the Cua Ong Temple relic complex and was recognized as a Special National Historical Relic in 2017.
4.3 Visit Tien Well
Tien Well is a spot I find truly worth visiting within the temple grounds. What is special is that the well is located near the sea, yet its water remains fresh, sourced from deep within the mountain. In early spring, many people come here to draw water, wash their faces, or take water home wishing for good luck. According to records on February 3, 2025, which corresponds to the 6th day of the Lunar New Year, hundreds of cars brought visitors to the temple for worship and to draw water from Tien Well.

4.4 Join the early spring festival
If you travel at the beginning of the year, I recommend choosing the 6th day of the first lunar month, as this is the annual opening day of the Cap Tien Temple Festival. The ritual part includes ceremonies such as incense offering, reporting rituals, and prayers for peace—praying for national peace and prosperity, favorable weather, and calm seas. The festive atmosphere usually lasts throughout spring, from around the first to the third lunar month.

4.5 Sightseeing and photography
After making offerings, I usually take time to stroll and admire the scenery around the temple. Nestled at the foot of Tien Mountain along Bai Tu Long Bay, the temple features a setting of "leaning on the mountain, stepping on the water", making the surrounding landscape remarkably peaceful. The main temple area is described by several tourism sources as covering about 102 m², consisting of a front hall and an inner sanctuary. There are also visiting spots such as the main temple, Son Trang Grotto, and Tien Well.
