3 Construction History of Tra Co Church
The history of Tra Co Church is closely intertwined with the founding of Tra Co Parish. Among the earliest settlers on Tra Co Island were many Catholic faithful who established small religious hamlets.
Initially, practicing faith faced numerous challenges. However, between 1861 and 1862, when rebellions and religious persecutions intensified, many Catholic families sought refuge on the island, significantly increasing the number of believers.
In 1857, Father Cap brought parishioners from Truc Son to Tra Co Village, established the parish, and was considered its first priest. He divided the parish into five initial sub-parishes, later expanded to seven, fostering a united community that regularly gathered in Tra Co to celebrate major feast days.
In 1913, when Father Trang Nghiem took charge of the parish, he commenced the construction of a new church featuring Western architecture. Just one year later, the new Tra Co Church was officially completed on an impressive scale: 130m long, 30m wide, and 30m high. A distinctive highlight was its walls built from limestone, finely crushed seashells, and clam shells.

From 1918 to 2018, the church underwent numerous additions and restorations. Most notably, the bell tower was constructed in 1918 under Father Gracia Trang Thien, reaching a height of 90m. During the border war in 1979, the sanctuary was heavily damaged by bombs and artillery. Later, parishioners joined hands to rebuild the house of God in 1995.
In 2018, the old sanctuary was dismantled, and a new house of God was built upon the exact same foundation. The new Tra Co Church retains its signature Gothic architecture with intricate decorative details. Today, the church stands as a splendid, magnificent architectural symbol, enriching the cultural and spiritual life of Mong Cai.
4 Discovering the Architecture of Tra Co Church
Tra Co Church is a prime example of Western Gothic architecture introduced to Vietnam, exuding an ancient, dignified charm. Its architectural highlights include pointed arches, towering spires, and elaborate reliefs. Hundreds of bas-reliefs on the walls depict biblical events through vivid, artistic imagery.
4.1 "Secrets" of the Building Material: Century-Old Walls of Clam and Oyster Shells
Standing before Tra Co Church, what intrigued and amazed me most was its foundation and masonry walls. Ancient builders skillfully combined limestone with tens of thousands of finely crushed, calcified oyster and clam shells.
This unique natural mortar not only helped the structure withstand the saline air and ocean winds for over a century, but upon closer inspection, you can also notice distinctive rustic, coarse textures deeply characteristic of the sea.
This is one of the large-scale religious architectural works that still preserves the historic and cultural essence of the 19th century. Gothic architecture has left profound marks across Vietnam, and Tra Co Church stands as a prominent masterpiece, drawing many visitors to admire and explore.

4.2 The Interior Sanctuary: An Interplay of Light and Color
While the church's exterior boasts grandeur with pointed vaulted roofs and a towering bell spire, stepping inside the sanctuary truly captivates visitors with its mystical ambiance.
Arched windows fitted with vibrant stained glass welcome abundant natural sunlight. Whenever beams of light filter through, the stone floor and wooden pews shimmer with vivid colors, creating an ethereal, sacred atmosphere reaching toward Heaven.
