Thanks to the Hanoi–Hai Phong–Ha Long expressway network, traveling from Hanoi to Quang Ninh is now much easier than before. Official provincial documents and information show that the expressway system has reduced travel time from Hanoi to Ha Long to a little over 2 hours in favorable conditions, compared with nearly 4 hours via the old routes.
However, for travelers, the more important question is not “Which vehicle is the fastest?” but rather: Will the vehicle take me to the exact area I need to reach? A vehicle that drops you off in Bai Chay is very different from one that takes you directly to a hotel in Hon Gai or all the way to the port.
Limousine: convenient for most independent travelers
A limousine or small-seat vehicle is suitable if you:

Are traveling alone or in a group of 2–4 people.

Do not want to drive yourself.

Have a moderate amount of luggage.

Want to be picked up at a location in central Hanoi and dropped off relatively close to your accommodation.
The advantage is that you have fewer transfers than with a traditional coach.
However, “door-to-door pickup” does not mean that every vehicle can enter every street. Some operators gather passengers at a meeting point or transfer them in a smaller vehicle. Before booking, ask clearly:
Exactly where is the pickup point?
Will you be dropped off in Bai Chay, Hon Gai, or directly at the hotel?
Is there a vehicle change en route?
Coach: economical, but factor in the first and last legs
A coach is suitable for people who prioritize their budget. Quang Ninh still maintains an interprovincial bus-station network, with Bai Chay Bus Station being an important hub. The 2026 transport planning documents record that the province has 13 operating bus stations. The downside is that you may have to: Hanoi → bus station → coach → Bai Chay → taxi/bus → hotel.
If you are traveling with two or more people, add up the costs of all these legs before concluding that the coach is definitely the cheapest option.
Private car: best for families and larger groups
If you are traveling with young children, older adults, or a group of 4–7 people, hiring a private car often makes the journey easier. Its greatest strength is door-to-door service.
You can request a direct trip:

Noi Bai → Ha Long.

Hanoi → Tuan Chau.

Hanoi → Yen Tu → Ha Long.
A private car is especially worth considering if you need to be at the port on time the following morning.
What about Noi Bai Airport?
If you have just landed, do not automatically travel into central Hanoi and only then catch a Ha Long bus. Compare: Noi Bai → Ha Long directly with Noi Bai → Hanoi → Ha Long. The second option may be cheaper in some cases, but it will add travel time and another luggage transfer.
