One of the most regrettable mistakes when visiting Ha Long Bay is: The boat wasn't late – the passengers weren't late – but they arrived at the wrong port. Many people still assume that “visiting the bay = going to Tuan Chau.” That is no longer entirely accurate.
The official Ha Long Bay website currently publishes multiple itineraries, from VHL1 to VHL8, and the operating port/pier system spans more than just a single location. For instance, VHL8 is a coastal route connecting Tuan Chau International Passenger Port – Ha Long International Cruise Port – Nam Cau Trang.
Tuan Chau Port
Tuan Chau is a well-known departure hub for many sightseeing boats and cruises. If your hotel is in Bai Chay, do not underestimate your travel time just because it looks “both in Ha Long” on the map. In the morning, numerous tour groups head to the port at once, so boarding, disembarking, finding the check-in counter, and completing departure procedures must all be factored into your schedule.
Ha Long International Cruise Port
This port is located on the Bai Chay side and also serves many sightseeing itineraries. Therefore, two bookings both labeled “Ha Long Bay Tour” may have completely different departure points.
Don't Search for the Port by Tour Company Name
A single tour company may operate multiple boats. A cruise brand may also offer several different itineraries. Google Maps may show a ticketing office rather than the actual boat departure point. Therefore, you must confirm the exact boarding location, not the company's office address.
Overnight Cruise Guests Must Double-Check Even More Carefully
Overnight cruises typically feature:
-
An early gathering time.
-
Dedicated check-in.
-
Transfer from the waiting lounge to the boat.
-
In some cases, tender boat transfers.
If you miss your scheduled time, “hailing a taxi to chase after the boat” is simply not a realistic option.
Checklist for the Night Before
-
Save the boat's name.
-
Save the operator's hotline number.
-
Open the port's location on your map.
-
Ask your hotel how long it takes to travel from your accommodation to the port.
-
Arrive earlier than the required boarding time.
