Before the expressway was built, combining Ha Long and Mong Cai in a short itinerary was quite exhausting. Today, the Hai Phong – Ha Long – Van Don – Mong Cai expressway corridor forms a continuous route running through most of Quang Ninh. According to planning records updated in 2026, the Ha Long – Van Don – Mong Cai section stretches about 151km, reducing travel time between Ha Long and Mong Cai from nearly 4 hours to just over 2 hours.
This makes Mong Cai much more accessible, but it does not mean you should rush through it like this: Ha Long → Mong Cai → Tra Co → Sa Vi → lunch → return to Ha Long within a few hours.
Why stay overnight?
Mong Cai is much more than just a border check-in landmark. Having traveled this far, you also have:
-
A unique border city vibe.
-
Tra Co.
-
Binh Ngoc.
-
Tra Co Communal House.
-
Local gastronomy.
-
The morning rhythm of coastal living.
If you return right away, the majority of your day will be spent on the expressway.
A sensible 2-day itinerary
Day 1:
Ha Long → Mong Cai → downtown sightseeing → Tra Co → overnight in Mong Cai/Tra Co.
Day 2:
Tra Co sunrise → selected cultural sites → lunch → return to Ha Long.
If your next destination is Binh Lieu, you can set up a separate eastern route instead of heading straight back to Ha Long.
Traveling by private car
This is the most convenient choice when traveling in a group. However, keep in mind that long highway stretches at steady speeds can easily cause drowsiness. Take breaks when tired rather than pushing to beat the clock. The CT.06 expressway corridor now runs directly from Hai Phong to Mong Cai, featuring interchanges at Ha Long, Van Don, Tien Yen, Dam Ha, Hai Ha, and Mong Cai.
Traveling by motorbike?
Motorbikes are prohibited on expressways. Consequently, the travel time and route are entirely different from cars. Do not take car driving estimates from Google Maps and apply them to a motorbike schedule. If your goal is a touring road trip, treat the standard national highways as part of the adventure and stay overnight along the route if necessary.
Checklist

-
On long driving stretches, take turns at the wheel whenever possible.
