Binh Lieu often gives visitors the feeling: “Quang Ninh has great expressways, just drive straight and you'll get there.”
That is not entirely true. The interprovincial expressway network makes reaching eastern Quang Ninh faster, but Binh Lieu is located in the mountainous area north of this corridor. Provincial planning determines connections between mountainous areas such as Tien Yen and Binh Lieu to the expressway via routes such as National Highway 4B and provincial roads.
Traveling by car: expressways help shorten the main leg
If departing from Ha Long, cars can take the expressway towards the eastern region and then exit in the appropriate direction to reach Binh Lieu. However, do not try to memorize a “standard exit” from an old blog post from years ago. Infrastructure and traffic organization can be adjusted. Use updated maps and follow actual road signs.
Traveling by motorbike: absolutely do not enter expressways
Current road traffic order and safety laws stipulate that motorcycles and mopeds are not allowed on expressways, except for vehicles serving management and maintenance under regulations. This is especially important because navigation apps may sometimes suggest a faster route without the user realizing it is an expressway. Before riding a motorbike, turn on the mode: Avoid expressways. The hardest part is not the long distance. The hardest parts are the stretches with:
-
Mountain roads.
-
Numerous curves.
-
Fog.
-
Wet road surfaces.
-
Reduced visibility.
-
Large temperature differences between morning and evening.
Drivers accustomed to city driving should not judge their capability based on kilometer count. 100 km of urban roads and 100 km of mountain roads are two completely different experiences.
Traveling during reed season and the cold season
This is also when Binh Lieu is at its most appealing, and at the same time prone to:
-
Fog.
-
Damp road surfaces.
-
Early darkness.
-
Temperatures dropping much more sharply than in Ha Long.
Aim to arrive before dark.
Before riding a motorbike
Check:
-
Tires.
-
Tire pressure.
-
Brakes.
-
Lights.
-
Horn.
-
Fuel.
-
Raincoat.
-
Gloves.
-
Windbreaker.
-
Phone battery.
Do not rent an unfamiliar vehicle in the morning and immediately ride it on long mountain passes. Test-ride it around town first.
When arriving at the border area
Binh Lieu has many check-in spots near the border.
Do not arbitrarily:
-
Cross fences.
-
Take unauthorized trails.
-
Fly drones in restricted areas.
-
Follow online “photo-op coordinates” while ignoring signs.
