If departing from the South, flying direct to Van Don can completely change how you plan your Quang Ninh itinerary. Instead of: HCMC → Noi Bai → over 2 more hours by road to Ha Long, you can land right in Quang Ninh. Van Don International Airport is located in the Van Don special economic zone, about 50km from central Ha Long/Bai Chay and about 8km from central Van Don, according to official information from the provincial tourism sector.
Who benefits the most when flying to Van Don?
It is especially worth considering if your itinerary is:
Van Don → Quan Lan/Minh Chau
Van Don → Co To
Van Don → Bai Tu Long
or
Van Don → Ha Long → Mong Cai.
If the destination is only Ha Long, you should still compare total airfare and flight times with the option of flying to Noi Bai/Cat Bi + road travel.
Where to go after landing?
If going to Ha Long
Pre-book a taxi, chartered vehicle, or shuttle. If staying in Bai Chay or Hon Gai, provide the specific hotel name instead of simply saying “to Ha Long”.
If going to the islands
Van Don Airport has a major advantage because it is in the same area as the Ao Tien waterway hub. But do not plan: Flight lands → rush straight → catch the last boat to the island with too tight a buffer. Flights can be delayed, baggage may arrive late, and boats also depend on operating conditions. If the flight timing is not ideal, staying overnight in Van Don is usually safer.
If going to Mong Cai
The airport is located near the inter-provincial expressway, so Van Don is also a reasonable gateway if the trip focuses on eastern Quang Ninh.
Quick checklist
-
Double-check the flight route before buying connecting tickets.
-
Do not assume this season's flight schedule applies year-round.
-
Pre-book airport transport if arriving at night.
-
If traveling to the islands, leave a large buffer between the flight and the boat.
-
Save flight numbers and bookings offline.
-
Compare total travel time, not just airfares.
