1 An Overview of Bai Tho Mountain
1.1 Locating Bai Tho Mountain
Right in the heart of Ha Long City, Quang Ninh Province, stands a beautiful and renowned limestone mountain. Do you know what it is? That is Bai Tho Mountain (Poem Mountain) – an artistic gem that has captivated countless visitors to Ha Long. Though it is simply a limestone mountain standing majestically for ages amidst numerous other natural wonders such as caves, fishing villages, islets, and Ha Long's beaches...
Nevertheless, Bai Tho Mountain remains a wonderful destination, embodying the artistic souls of generations of poets. More notably, today, Bai Tho Mountain still preserves many exquisite poems carved in Chinese characters on the rock faces by King Le Thanh Tong (1468) and Lord An Do Vuong Trinh Cuong (1972).
1.2 Geological Origin of Bai Tho Mountain
Bai Tho Mountain is a result of the Indosinian orogeny, dating back to the Devonian period. Its spear-shaped peak rises directly into the blue sky to an elevation of up to 168 meters. Surrounding it are smaller peaks forming precariously perched crags, along with sheer vertical cliffs and razor-sharp cat-ear rocks that look exceedingly rugged... Yet, it is precisely these features that lend Bai Tho Mountain an ancient, mystical, and occasionally poetic charm.
In the past, Bai Tho Mountain was also known by other names such as Roi Den (or Truyen Dang Son – Light Transmission Mountain). According to ancient folklore, whenever invaders approached, guards atop the mountain would immediately light a beacon fire as a signal to alert the royal court and the king. Hence, it was called Truyen Dang Mountain. It was not until later, when King Le Thanh Tong carved a magnificent poem onto the cliff face, that it was quickly renamed Bai Tho Mountain.
2 How to Get to Bai Tho Mountain
If departing from the center of Ha Long City, you just need to follow Le Thanh Tong Street. When you reach Hang Noi Street—where the Nam Phong Cafe signboard is located—turn toward the opposite side of the road and enter a small alley that winds past local houses. Once there, simply ask the local residents for directions to find the exact route to the top, as Google Maps can sometimes be inaccurate here.
Currently, the foot of Bai Tho Mountain is looked after and guarded by a local household nearby. If you arrive and find the entrance gate closed, remember to ask the homeowner to open it for you. In addition, for convenience, you should park your vehicle at the beverage stall at the entrance of the alley or head over to the Ha Long Market area to park.
3 Ideal Time for Climbing Bai Tho Mountain
The dry season is always the ideal time for trekking in general and conquering Bai Tho Mountain in particular. In northern Vietnam, the dry season typically lasts from November to April of the following year. You can keep this period in mind when planning your itinerary to explore Bai Tho Mountain.
However, unpredictable weather with heavy rain can still occur, making the trail slippery and hazardous for the hike. Therefore, you should check the weather forecast in advance to thoroughly prevent potential risks.
