Yen Trung Lake: A Relaxing Weekend Escape

Yen Trung Lake is quite deep, with crystal-clear water, and is surrounded by rolling hills and green pine trees. It lies right along National Highway 18A, which connects Hanoi and Ha Long, and is only about 30km from Hai Phong, making it convenient to travel to many other notable attractions. The first things that catch your eye when you arrive are the clear jade-green water and the cheerful sound of the pines. 

Admission is free, so you only need to pay for a few additional services, such as boat, hammock, and hut rentals. Entry to the carefully tended flower garden costs 50.000đ. Camping fees range from 150.000đ - 300.000đ per campsite, so keep this in mind. 

The road to Yen Trung Lake looks completely different from what you might imagine of the dusty roads in this mining region. Pine forests line both sides of the road, and as you travel farther in, the cool green landscape gradually comes into view. After reaching Uong Bi, Quang Ninh, you will see signs pointing toward Yen Trung. From there, continue for another 1km to reach the lake. 

If you travel from Hanoi along National Highway 18A, the journey is about 115km and takes just under 3 hours. Yen Trung Lake is also only about 40km from Ha Long Bay, making it convenient for anyone hoping to visit the bay and stay overnight. 

 

At Yen Trung Lake, it is easy to come across rows of towering pine trees lining both sides of the road. Visitors can stroll around, lean against the sturdy trunks, and enjoy the sunlight filtering through the leaves. Though the setting may seem simple and unspoiled, the endless pine-covered slopes are a distinctive highlight that lends the area irresistible charm. So, if you plan to visit Yen Trung Lake, remember to fully charge your phone if you want to take plenty of photos among the pines. 

Perhaps Yen Trung Lake’s most captivating feature is its tranquil freshwater expanse, covering more than 100ha and reflecting the deep blue sky. Rows of pine trees near the lake cast their shade over the water, creating a wonderfully peaceful scene. In the distance, you can see layer upon layer of mountains, while the surrounding vegetation adds to the lake’s poetic beauty. 

If you like, you can rent a boat to explore the lake for just 30.000đ/h, or rent a kayak for 80.000đ - 100.000đ/h. It is very affordable. Cruising around the lake makes for a unique experience you will be hard-pressed to find elsewhere. 

Camping is a fun activity enjoyed by many visitors, especially young people, at Yen Trung Lake. In the fresh, cool, and somewhat romantic surroundings, you can camp or enjoy an ideal weekend picnic. There is no need to bring much: just pack a tent and a few snacks, such as potatoes and corn to roast, then chat and relax amid the lovely scenery and fresh air. 

A few tips for a successful camping trip: 

Pack essentials in case of sudden rain or storms, such as a tarp and waterproof bags. 

Bring enough water and water-filtering equipment if needed. 

Bring a tent, camping gear, guy lines, and other essentials. 

Pack food and compact cooking equipment, such as a mini gas stove, if you want to cook for yourself. 

The Garden of Eden is a popular attraction at Yen Trung Lake among young people and couples. When you visit, you can admire panoramic views of the deep-green lake and take souvenir photos at beautifully decorated spots. Yen Trung Lake is also a wonderful setting for striking wedding photos. One example is the Love Bridge, a witness to the many couples who have crossed it before becoming spouses. The bridge features romantic architecture, is painted a vivid red, and is decorated with flower garlands, locks, and sparkling LED lights…

Nang Restaurant is only about 550m from Yen Trung Lake and has a cool, garden-style setting that feels close to nature. It also offers appealing meal combos and great deals for larger groups. 

The best time to visit and admire Yen Trung Lake is from April to September. Leave the smoggy city behind and enjoy a lush green retreat with a refreshing breeze. If you plan to camp overnight, do not miss the two most beautiful moments of the day: sunrise and sunset. 

- Do not swim or fish in Yen Trung Lake, as its depth makes it very dangerous. Instead, visit the nearby natural waterfall, just about 3km away. 

- You can bring a grill for a BBQ, but do not light fires in the forest or near pine trees being tapped for resin, as they can easily catch fire. 

- Clean up all waste after eating and camping. 

- Bring identification and some cash for expenses and deposits. 

- There is a hotel about 500m from the lake with reasonable rates. 

Located not far from Hanoi, Yen Trung Lake’s green surroundings offer a chance to unwind and recharge with your loved ones. What is more, Yen Trung Lake Tourist Area has been recognized as a provincial-level ecotourism site.
