There is no single answer to the question “Which month is the best to visit Quang Ninh?”. You might encounter a gorgeous sunny day in Ha Long, yet at the same time, the mountainous region of Binh Lieu is shrouded in thick fog. Or in late autumn, when the beach is no longer the top choice for many families, Binh Lieu enters one of its most stunning seasons. A more accurate approach is to choose the season based on your desired experience.
Beaches and islands: prioritize summer, but monitor maritime weather closely
From late April through the summer, Ha Long, Van Don, and Co To welcome massive influxes of visitors. In the summer, island routes such as Van Don – Co To alone see a sharp surge in travelers, especially on weekends. This is the ideal time for swimming, resort stays, and outdoor activities. In return, summer is also when you need to closely track thunderstorms, tropical depressions, typhoons, and maritime weather warnings.
A day on the mainland might bring only light rain, but offshore wind and wave conditions could already warrant ferry schedule adjustments. Therefore, if visiting Co To, Quan Lan, or Minh Chau, avoid booking connecting flights or trains too close to your scheduled return time to the mainland.
Visiting Yen Tu: bustling in spring, more peaceful in other seasons
The early spring festival season remains Yen Tu's peak attraction, spanning the first months of the year. However, this is no longer the only option. From 2026, Yen Tu has expanded a range of summer-to-autumn offerings such as trekking, trail running, meditation, and cultural experiences to become a four-season destination. If you wish to avoid festival crowds, visiting in summer, autumn, or on weekdays offers a much more tranquil Yen Tu.
Seeing Binh Lieu at its best: aim for late autumn – early winter
Binh Lieu is beautiful in multiple seasons, but the period from late October through November typically stands out with terraced rice fields, white reed grass, and crisp highland weather. Official sources in Quang Ninh note that the reed grass season usually peaks from late October to mid-or-late November, while the golden rice harvest generally falls between late October and early November, depending on the year.
Note: Do not book your trip solely based on a post from the previous year. Rice can ripen earlier or later depending on weather conditions, and the blooming reed grass season is also fleeting.
Pre-trip checklist before picking your dates
-
Beaches & islands: check maritime weather forecasts, not just mainland Ha Long temperatures.
-
Binh Lieu: verify the current status of rice fields/reed grass close to your departure date.
-
Yen Tu in spring: allow extra travel time due to large crowds.
-
Holidays, Tet, and summer weekends: book accommodation and transportation well in advance.
-
Always have a Plan B in case outdoor activities are disrupted.
