1.2 The Origins of the Name Sung Sot Cave
Sung Sot Cave was first discovered by the French in 1901. Its extraordinary beauty and grandeur astonished so many people that they named it “La Grotte des Surprises” (The Cave of Surprises). However, the name did not become widely known until 40 years later.
A year before UNESCO recognized the core zone of Ha Long Bay as a World Natural Heritage Site, Sung Sot Cave began welcoming its first visitors. CNN Travel has also regularly included it on its list of Vietnam's seven most beautiful caves.

2 The Majestic Beauty of Sung Sot Cave
Situated in the heart of the Ha Long Bay World Heritage Site, Sung Sot Cave is one of the largest and most beautiful caves in the bay. Covering more than 10,000 square meters, it is likened to an opera house in the middle of the sea, with thousands of uniquely shaped stalactites and stalagmites found nowhere else.
One of Sung Sot Cave's most distinctive features is the contrast between its exterior and interior. Just beyond the narrow entrance lies a vast cavern filled with countless sparkling stalactites. This contrast leaves many visitors astonished, exceeding even the limits of their imagination. Squeezing through the narrow opening feels like stepping into a beautiful, mysterious and magical world.
At an elevation of about 25 meters above sea level, the cave consists of two main chambers, each with its own magnificent appeal. The first chamber is about 30 meters high and serves as a waiting room before visitors enter the second. Visitors follow a narrow stone path lit by low lamp posts that serve both as guide markers and decorative lighting.

The cave is divided into two chambers, creating vast hall-like spaces. Lamps along both sides of the path highlight the enchanting beauty of this natural wonder. The second chamber opens onto a completely different scene. It is immense and can hold thousands of people at once.
As you venture farther inside, rock formations in unique shapes—including Saint Giong, a sword, an elephant, and seals—gradually appear along the path, delighting visitors. Beyond its natural beauty, Sung Sot Cave also attracts visitors with mysterious legends and stories that blur the line between dreams and reality.
Legend has it that after defeating the An invaders and fulfilling his noble mission, Saint Giong rode a cloud back to heaven, leaving his sword and precious horse behind to protect the villagers and drive away evil spirits and demons. The cave also preserves traces of that battle: several small ponds around it are said to resemble the imprints left by the horse's hooves.

Following the trail through the cave toward the exit, visitors are even more amazed to come upon the “Royal Garden,” a scene straight out of a painting. A crystal-clear pond, picturesque water scenery, and lush vegetation bring the area to life. At times, the calls of monkeys gathering here to forage for fruit echo through the vast space.
The spectacular scenery of Sung Sot Cave is one reason why local people can confidently say that Ha Long Bay is beautiful not only for its majestic landscapes, but also for its mysterious, magical caves—a precious gift from nature. This is undoubtedly a must-see destination for anyone visiting Ha Long Bay.
