You don't need to bring an entire suitcase on every Ha Long boat trip. For day tours, a small day bag is usually much more useful than a large backpack because you have to:
-
Board and disembark boats.
-
Walk on piers.
-
Go into caves.
-
Climb steps.
-
Possibly kayak or rowboat.
What should you bring on a day tour?
A small bag with:
-
Phone.
-
Power bank.
-
Water.
-
Sunscreen.
-
Hat.
-
Sunglasses.
-
Light windbreaker.
-
Personal medication.
-
Tissues.
-
A waterproof bag.
No need to bring:
-
Two spare sets of clothes.
-
Laptop.
-
Large cosmetic bag.
-
All your travel documents.
If kayaking
Set aside a tiny bag for water activities. Only bring:
-
Phone if really necessary.
-
Tested waterproof bag.
-
Glasses strap if needed.
Wallets, passports, and hard-to-replace items should stay in a safer place.
Where to leave your suitcase on a day tour?
If you have checked out of your hotel but are visiting the Bay before leaving Ha Long:
-
Ask the hotel to store your luggage.
-
Ask the tour operator if they offer luggage storage.
-
Agree on a time to pick it up.
Do not bring a large suitcase onto the boat unless necessary.
Overnight cruise
Your suitcase can accompany you this time, but you should still have a separate small bag.
Use the day bag for:
-
Caves.
-
Ti Top Island.
-
Kayaking.
-
Visiting fishing villages.
That way, you won't have to open your suitcase every time you need sunscreen or medication.
A spare set of dry clothes
If the itinerary includes kayaking or activities where you might get wet, a light shirt and a few small spare items can be useful. But don't pack your whole wardrobe.
What kind of shoes?
A pair of shoes or sandals that:
-
Have good grip.
-
Are easy on steps.
-
Are not too slippery when wet.
are usually much more practical than shoes that “look good in photos” but make climbing difficult.
Medication you must keep on you
If you have medication that needs to be taken on time, don't leave it in a suitcase stored elsewhere.
