1 Where is Cap Tien Temple?

Cap Tien Temple is located in Dong Xa Commune, Van Don District, Quang Ninh Province, near Bai Tu Long Bay and within the Cu Ong Temple complex. When I visited, I was impressed by the temple’s “mountain behind, water in front” setting: the majestic Tien Mountain rises behind it, while the front faces the poetic blue sea, creating a sacred and tranquil atmosphere.

Today, Cap Tien Temple is a familiar stop for visitors interested in spiritual tourism in Quang Ninh, especially in early spring. Its timeworn atmosphere, picturesque scenery, and sacred legends have made it one of the most famous temples in the Northeast region.

2 The temple’s history and spiritual significance

While learning about Cap Tien Temple, I found out that it is also known as Co Be Cua Suot Temple. The temple is believed to have been built during the Tran Dynasty and is associated with the legend of the daughter of Hung Nhuong Dai Vuong Tran Quoc Tang.

According to local folklore, after she died, residents built a temple in her honor to commemorate her contributions. During the Nguyen Dynasty, the temple also began to enshrine a senior official who had helped improve local people’s lives and renovate the temple.

In terms of spiritual significance, I feel that Cap Tien Temple is a place where locals and visitors come to offer incense and pray for peace, good fortune, prosperity, and safe sea voyages.

3 How to get to Cap Tien Temple

I’ve visited Cap Tien Temple many times, so I’d like to suggest the most convenient way to get there. The temple is in Van Don, Quang Ninh, about 2 km from Cu Ong Temple and approximately 8 km from the center of Cai Rong.

If you’re traveling from Hanoi, you can take the Hanoi–Hai Phong–Ha Long–Van Don Expressway. The distance is around 209-220 km, and the drive takes about 3 hours.

For those who enjoy an adventure, traveling by motorbike is also a great option, as the coastal roads in Quang Ninh are quite scenic. From Ha Long, continue for about 50-60 km to reach the Van Don area. Near Cu Ong Temple, continue to the entrance of Van Don II Bridge, then turn right and travel about 400 m to Cap Tien Temple.

4 Must-do activities at Cap Tien Temple

4.1 Explore the temple’s architecture

The main temple covers an area of about 102 m² and is built in the traditional Dinh-shaped architectural style, consisting of a front worship hall and a rear sanctuary. This is a familiar design in traditional religious structures in northern Vietnam.

In addition to the main temple, the complex also includes Son Trang Cave and Fairy Well. Together, these features create a harmonious setting for visitors, combining spiritual elements with natural scenery where you can take a leisurely stroll and snap photos.

What I like about Cap Tien Temple is that, while it isn’t particularly grand, it feels historic and peaceful. Nestled against the mountain and looking out over the bay, the temple blends naturally into its surroundings and makes a lovely stop on a spiritual journey through Van Don.

4.2 Offer incense and pray for peace

When I visit Cap Tien Temple, I usually offer incense at the main temple to pray for peace, good health, good fortune, and prosperity. This is the most important part of my visits, especially in early spring. Cap Tien Temple is part of the Cu Ong Temple complex, which was recognized as a Special National Historical Site in 2017.

4.3 Visit Fairy Well

Fairy Well is a spot in the temple grounds that I think is well worth visiting. What makes it special is that, although it is near the sea, its water is fresh and comes from within the mountain. In early spring, many people come to draw water, wash their faces, or take some home in the hope of inviting good luck. According to reports on 3/2/2025, the sixth day of the Lunar New Year, hundreds of cars brought visitors to the temple to pay their respects and collect water from Fairy Well.

4.4 Join the early-spring festival

If you visit at the start of the year, I recommend going on the sixth day of the first lunar month, when the annual Cap Tien Temple Festival opens. Ceremonies include offering incense, paying respects, and praying for peace, as well as prayers for a prosperous nation, peaceful communities, favorable weather, and calm seas. The festival atmosphere usually continues throughout spring, from around the first to the third lunar month.

4.5 Enjoy the scenery and take photos

After making offerings, I usually spend some time enjoying the scenery around the temple. Located at the foot of Tien Mountain beside Bai Tu Long Bay, the temple is set in a peaceful landscape, with its “mountain at its back and water at its feet.” Some travel sources state that the main temple covers about 102 m² and consists of a front worship hall and a rear sanctuary. Other attractions include the main temple, Son Trang Cave, and Fairy Well.

- Combine your visit with nearby attractions: After visiting the temple, you can also stop by Cu Ong Temple or other places around Van Don to make the most of your trip.
