One of the most unfortunate mistakes when visiting Ha Long Bay is: The boat is not late – the passenger is not late either – but the passenger arrives at the wrong port. Many people still assume that “going to the bay = going to Tuan Chau.” That is no longer accurate enough.
The official Ha Long Bay website currently lists multiple VHL1–VHL8 itineraries, with more than one port/pier involved in operations. For example, VHL8 is a coastal route connecting Tuan Chau International Cruise Port – Ha Long International Cruise Port – Nam Cau Trang.
Tuan Chau Port
Tuan Chau is a familiar hub for many sightseeing boats and cruise ships. If your hotel is in Bai Chay, don’t estimate your travel time too tightly just because the map shows that both places are “in Ha Long.” In the morning, many groups head to the port at the same time, so time for getting on and off the vehicle, finding the counter, and completing procedures all needs to be included in your schedule.
Ha Long International Cruise Port
The port is located on the Bai Chay side and also serves many sightseeing routes. Therefore, two bookings that both say “Ha Long Bay tour” may well have different meeting points.
Don’t search for the port using the tour company’s name
A company may sell tickets for multiple boats. A cruise brand may also operate several itineraries. Google Maps may show the ticket office rather than the boat’s departure point. Therefore, confirm the boarding point, not the company’s office address.
Cruise passengers staying overnight need to check even more carefully
Overnight cruises often have:

If you miss the scheduled time, “taking a taxi to chase the boat” is not a practical option.
