1 Is Ha Long in May worth visiting?
If you are planning a trip to the heritage bay, let me quickly answer your first questions about Ha Long in May.
Should you go? Definitely yes. This is the start of an exciting summer season.
What is the weather like? The weather turns hot and humid. Strong sunshine appears, but the sky is very clear and the sea is deep blue.
What makes it special? This is the best time to immerse yourself in the cool water or admire panoramic views of the bay from above on a seaplane.

2 Weather conditions in Ha Long in May
2.1 Detailed Ha Long weather in May
Summer in the bay area usually begins in May and lasts through October. When visiting Ha Long in May, you will clearly feel the shift in temperature. The average temperature at this time is around 28.6°C, occasionally peaking at 38°C. This is a period of intense heat that lasts throughout the day.
A characteristic of Ha Long in May is that humidity begins to rise. This is also when the rainy season officially starts. In fact, around 80 to 85% of the annual rainfall is concentrated between May and October. However, this does not diminish the bay's allure. Crystal-clear skies and emerald waters are the reward for those who do not mind the sun. Be sure to bring sunscreen to protect your skin.

2.2 Comparing Ha Long in May with other seasons of the year
Each season in Ha Long takes on a completely different look. If you are still hesitating, let's make a quick comparison.
Unlike the radiant beauty of Ha Long in May, winter from November to February of the following year carries a mysterious charm. The temperature then is only around 16.7°C, occasionally dropping as low as 5°C. Dense fog impairs visibility, and swimming is almost impossible. If May is for activities, winter is for relaxation and tranquility.
Spring from February to April brings drier, cooler weather with temperatures ranging from 18 to 23°C. However, March often sees more rain and rising humidity. Compared to the sultry heat of May, spring is pleasant for outdoor activities, but the sea water is not yet warm enough for swimming to your heart's content like in summer.
Meanwhile, autumn only lasts around October and November. This is considered the best time of year due to little rain, warm sunshine, and mild temperatures between 13 and 21°C. Nevertheless, if you love vibrant water sports and activities, Ha Long in May still holds the upper hand thanks to long daylight hours and brilliant sunshine.
3 Unmissable experiences
3.1 Cruising amidst the heritage bay
I chose to take a cruise to admire Fighting Cocks Islet and Stone Dog Islet. Sitting on the deck and catching the May sea breeze is truly an indescribable feeling. You must definitely explore Sung Sot Cave and Thien Cung Cave. The thousand-year-old stalactites will amaze you. Don't forget to go kayaking, too. Paddling across the emerald waters yourself is the best way to feel nature's grandeur.

3.2 Beating the heat at Bai Chay
Bai Chay in May is not yet overcrowded. The fine white sand beach and clear blue waters are inviting. I loved lounging under the coconut palms, watching the crimson sunset descend on the horizon. This is the most romantic moment of the day.

3.3 Modern and nostalgic check-in spots
Quang Ninh Museum is my favorite destination thanks to its pitch-black architecture resembling a giant block of coal, looking extremely "cool" in photos. Right next door is the library with its peaceful atmosphere. If you are looking for a touch of nostalgia, visit Bai Chay Old Town. The row of houses with Asian - European architecture will give you photos that look like you are abroad.

If you travel with friends or family, Sun World is the top choice. I spent the entire afternoon at Dragon Park trying out the thrill rides. Afterwards, I took the Queen Cable Car up to Ba Deo Peak to admire the panoramic view of Ha Long Bay from the Sun Wheel.

5.2 What to eat to savor the true ocean flavors?
Visiting Ha Long without trying squid patties is like not having been there at all. Fragrant hand-pounded squid patties served with hot steamed rice rolls are an exquisite treat. I also love mantis shrimp noodle soup with its subtly sweet broth. If you want to try novel flavors, sample grilled mud clams with scallion oil or "gat gu" cake dipped in minced pork fish sauce.

5.3 Practical experience and comparisons
Compared to the early months of the year which often see fog, Ha Long in May is much clearer. Compared to the scorching summer months of June and July, May is more pleasant and less crowded.
Here are my tips for the trip:
- Bring sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat. Although the May sun is mild, it can still tan your skin.
- You should book services 1 week in advance to get the best rates.
- If you are prone to seasickness, prepare motion sickness medication before boarding the sightseeing boat.
