Three days and two nights are not enough to “explore all of Quang Ninh,” but they are more than enough to understand why this land is so special. For first-timers, the journey should revolve around its two most prominent highlights: Ha Long and Yen Tu.
Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago is a World Natural Heritage site, while the Yen Tu – Vinh Nghiem – Con Son, Kiep Bac Complex was inscribed by UNESCO in 2025.
Day 1: Getting Acquainted with Ha Long
After arriving in Ha Long, do not rush to hop on a boat immediately. The first day should be used to “slow down”: check into your room, have lunch, and explore the urban area. If you love culture and history, you can spend time at the Quang Ninh Museum and the Hon Gai area. If you prefer a resort and entertainment vibe, Bai Chay is more convenient. Keep the evening relatively free: savor fresh seafood, take a coastal stroll, or experience the growing night economy offerings in Ha Long.
Day 2: Dedicated Entirely to Ha Long Bay
This is a day you shouldn't cram with extra plans. The official Ha Long Bay website currently lists routes VHL1–VHL8 with distinct clusters of experiences, ranging from iconic caves and landmarks to ecotourism, fishing village culture, and further-reaching routes. First-time visitors should select an itinerary based on their actual available time on the bay and personal preferences, rather than solely on promotional slogans promising “the most sights visited.”
-
If you want caves and familiar landmarks, choose an itinerary featuring classic attractions.
-
If you enjoy active pursuits, look for a route that includes kayaking/bamboo boating or hiking up to scenic viewpoints.
-
If peace and quiet are your priority, consider itineraries that venture further away from the main center.
After returning, avoid booking a long-distance bus ride that same evening. A full day spent on the boat, walking inside caves, and being exposed to the sun and sea breeze is often more tiring than you might think.
Day 3: Yen Tu
Set off early and spend a half-day or almost the entire day exploring Yen Tu, depending on your physical stamina. Notably, starting in 2026, Quang Ninh is waiving 100% of the entrance fees to the Yen Tu scenic landscape through the end of 2028. This applies to sightseeing fees; other services such as cable cars still require checking their separate price lists. You do not necessarily have to push yourself to reach the very peak if traveling with young children or elderly companions. The true value of Yen Tu lies not only in Dong Pagoda, but also across its entire pilgrimage landscape, mountain forests, and the historical relic system along the way.
Plan B
If the weather on Day 2 is unsuitable for cruising the bay, swap Day 2 and Day 3, provided operational conditions permit. This is precisely why a great itinerary is never “set in stone” down to every single minute.
