Quan Lạn is a very clear example of how a destination can be reduced to “one dimension” by travel photos.
Search online, and you will often see: white sand – seawater – resorts – electric vehicles. But for many centuries, this island area was part of the Vân Đồn Trading Port system, an important maritime trading center of Đại Việt.
Vân Đồn’s official source identifies the trading port as having been established in 1149 under King Lý Anh Tông, comprising numerous wharves distributed across the islands of Bái Tử Long; Cái Làng wharf on Quan Lạn was one of the system’s notable points. In 2023, the Vân Đồn Trading Port Complex was recognized as a Special National Monument.

The Vân Đồn Trading Port was not a single wharf. It was a system of wharves spread across a vast sea area, with traces found at:

So when you travel around the island, you are in a space that once connected Đại Việt with broader maritime trade routes.
Quan Lạn Communal House
The Quan Lạn communal house – pagoda – temple – nghè complex was recognized as a national monument in 1990. Quan Lạn Communal House was once associated with the Cái Làng wharf area – the center of part of the ancient trading port. This is a place to visit if you want your island trip to have more depth than an ordinary beach holiday.
The Chèo Bơi Festival
The traditional Vân Đồn Festival – commonly called the Quan Lạn chèo bơi festival – takes place in the middle of the sixth lunar month. The festival recreates memories of the Trần army and people’s victory in 1288 and is associated with Nhân Huệ Vương Trần Khánh Dư. In 2026, the traditional chèo bơi competition will continue to be held between the Đông Nam Văn and Đoài Bắc Võ giáp, attracting large numbers of local residents and visitors.
