1 An overview of Landmark 1305 – The border's "rooftop"
Located in Hoanh Mo Commune, Binh Lieu District, Landmark 1305 is one of the two highest border markers in Quang Ninh Province. Many people wonder how high Landmark 1305 really is. In fact, the landmark sits at an elevation of about 1,305 meters above sea level, perched on a western border patrol route that is extraordinarily rugged yet breathtakingly enchanting.
The journey to conquer Landmark 1305 from Hanoi (around 270 km) is not just a sightseeing trip, but also an opportunity for us to touch the sacred sovereignty of our Fatherland. Standing here, I could truly feel the sheer expansiveness and grandeur of Vietnam's nature. Binh Lieu is dubbed the "Sa Pa of Quang Ninh," but to me, this place possesses a much more rugged, wild, and "authentic" beauty. Landmark 1305 is not merely a number; it is a boundary marker, a proud anchor of national pride amidst the clouds.

To be honest with you all, the path leading up to Landmark 1305 is one of the most stunning and magnificent "dinosaur spines" I have ever seen in Vietnam. When I first learned about Binh Lieu through photographs, I genuinely didn't believe it was located in Quang Ninh because the landscape was so majestic and vast, feeling like somewhere deep in a remote border region far away. Only when setting foot here and witnessing with my own eyes the trails winding along the mountain ridges did I realize Quang Ninh truly has every kind of terrain, from islands and seas to towering, rolling peaks.
Below is the itinerary and practical tips that I have gathered after two trips to Quang Ninh conquering Landmark 1305. I hope this helps you on your upcoming journey!
2 The ideal time to gear up for Binh Lieu
Based on my experience across two different seasons, Landmark 1305 offers unique charms that will make your heart skip a beat at every turn:
- Spring: This is when all of nature awakens. Plants sprout fresh shoots, and the entire landscape comes alive with vibrant energy. You will see lush green buds veiled in ethereal mist, creating a romantic, cinematic scene.
- Summer: The season of verdant pine and star anise forests stretching as far as the eye can see. Although the sun shines brightly, the air at over 1,000 meters remains refreshingly cool and clean. This is an ideal season if you want to admire deep blue skies and crisp mountain ridges clearly visible all the way to the horizon.
- Autumn (October - November): This is Binh Lieu's "golden season"! The dinosaur spine is blanketed in pure white reed grass blossoms. When the breeze blows, the entire hillside resembles an undulating sea of white clouds, strikingly gorgeous. I once stood speechless for hours just watching the reeds sway in the wind.

- Winter: Ideal for true adventure seekers. The piercing border chill can bring frost and snow—an extraordinarily rare sight in Quang Ninh.
3 Directions to the foot of Landmark 1305
The road to Binh Lieu is now much more accessible than before, but the border patrol route remains a challenge for those unfamiliar with steep mountain passes. From the center of Binh Lieu District, you can choose one of two main routes to reach the staging point before trekking:
- Route 1: From Binh Lieu town, take National Highway 18C towards Luc Hon. After about 3–4 km, keep an eye out for a right turn into Ngan Chuong village. From here, make another turn at Marker 68 and travel for approximately 23 km more. This stretch of road curves like a silk ribbon, flanking towering peaks on one side and deep ravines on the other, offering truly breathtaking vistas.
- Route 2: Head straight from Binh Lieu town toward Hoanh Mo Border Gate. Turn left across Hai Nac Bridge, then take a right and drive for another 20+ km to reach the parking lot right at the foot of the ridge.
Today, the Ministry of National Defense has constructed a concrete path over 1 meter wide, making access to Landmark 1305 much safer. However, its sheer incline remains a demanding test of endurance for anyone.
4 Unique experiences I lived through at Landmark 1305
4.1 Testing your endurance across more than 2,000 steps
The trek to the summit usually takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. I began climbing at 5:45 AM, when the sky was just glowing red with dawn. Hiking early helped me avoid the scorching midday sun and gave me a chance to hunt for a sea of clouds with some luck. The steep slopes will test your perseverance to the limit. But take my word for it: reaching the second rest pavilion is already enough for the scenery to make you forget all your fatigue.

4.2 Embracing the breathtaking natural landscape
Standing on the "dinosaur spine," I was overwhelmed by the sheer vastness of nature, taking in a sweeping view of endless rolling mountain ranges. That immensity made my eyes want to gaze endlessly. Visiting for the second time, I was still compelled to utter a "wow" in awe of its grandeur.

4.3 Checking in at the sacred border marker
Touching the granite surface of Landmark 1305 and gazing at the deeply engraved National Title stirs an indescribable emotion. This is not merely a check-in photo; it is a milestone marking personal limits you have overcome.

5 Golden tips from my own journey
To make your journey to conquer Landmark 1305 seamless and fulfilling, keep these notes from my personal experience in mind:
- Train your physical stamina: Don't underestimate 2,000 steps. About a week before the trip, I usually practice stair climbing or do light jogging so my legs don't get "shocked" during the actual hike.
- Prepare personal gear: A pair of sports shoes with good traction is an absolute must. In addition, pack plain water, electrolyte drinks, and some chocolate or energy bars for quick refueling along the way. Don't forget a light windbreaker jacket, as the wind at the top of Landmark 1305 blows fiercely and chillingly cold.
- Plan a smart hiking schedule: Be an early riser. Hiking while the morning sky is still dim not only keeps you cool but also grants you gorgeous photos under gentle dawn light. Avoid climbing between 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM, as the intense midday sun will quickly deplete your energy.
- Travel light: The trail up to the landmark is narrow and steep, so a compact, well-supported backpack is your best choice. I chose an outdoor backpack from MIA.vn to accompany me on mountain climbs like this.

Conquering Landmark 1305 is not merely a sightseeing excursion, but a journey of self-discovery, testing your perseverance, and reveling in the wondrous gifts of nature. Even on my second visit, I still found my heart fluttering at the sight of pristine white reed blossoms and the majestic dinosaur spine. If you have the chance, pack your backpack and craft your very own adventure to fully embrace the sublime beauty of this borderland.
