Binh Lieu often gives visitors the impression: “Quang Ninh has great expressways, just drive straight and you will arrive.”
That is not entirely the case. The provincial expressway network makes reaching eastern Quang Ninh much faster, but Binh Lieu lies in the mountainous northern zone beyond this axis. Provincial planning connects mountainous areas like Tien Yen and Binh Lieu to the expressway via routes such as National Highway 4B and provincial roads.
Traveling by car: the expressway shortens the main leg
If departing from Ha Long, cars can take the expressway heading east and then exit toward Binh Lieu at the appropriate interchange. However, do not rely on a “standard exit” from an old blog post written years ago. Infrastructure and traffic management can change. Always use updated navigation maps and follow actual road signs.
Riding a motorbike: strictly avoid expressways
Current road traffic safety regulations state that motorcycles and mopeds are strictly prohibited from driving on expressways, except for authorized management and maintenance vehicles. This is especially crucial because navigation apps may occasionally suggest a faster route without users realizing it is an expressway. Before riding, make sure to enable the setting: Avoid highways/expressways. The most challenging aspect is not the long distance. The real difficulty lies in stretches with:
-
Mountain roads.
-
Sharp, winding curves.
-
Fog.
-
Wet road surfaces.
-
Reduced visibility.
-
Significant temperature drops in the morning and evening.
Riders accustomed to city driving should not gauge difficulty purely by mileage. Riding 100km on urban roads is an entirely different experience from tackling 100km of mountain passes.
Traveling during the reed grass and cold seasons
This is also when Binh Lieu is at its most enchanting, yet it frequently brings:
-
Dense fog.
-
Damp road conditions.
-
Early sunset.
-
Temperatures dropping much lower than in Ha Long.
Aim to reach your destination before nightfall.
Before riding a motorbike
Check:
-
Tires.
-
Tire pressure.
-
Brakes.
-
Lights.
-
Horn.
-
Fuel.
-
Raincoat.
-
Gloves.
-
Windbreaker jacket.
-
Phone battery.
Do not rent an unfamiliar motorbike in the morning and immediately embark on a long mountain ride. Test-ride it around town first.
When reaching border areas
Binh Lieu has numerous sightseeing and check-in spots along the national border.
Never do the following on your own:
-
Climb or cross fences.
-
Take unauthorized trails.
-
Fly drones or equipment in restricted areas.
-
Follow “viral photo coordinates” online while ignoring warning signs.
