Bo Nau Cave, a stunning limestone wonder in Ha Long Bay

1 Where is Bo Nau Cave? An introduction to Bo Nau Cave

Bo Nau Cave is located in the central area of the Ha Long Bay World Natural Heritage site in Quang Ninh Province. The cave is situated about 13 to 15 km southeast of Bai Chay Tourist Wharf and about 13 km from Tuan Chau Port.   

Bo Nau Cave sits on an island of the same name located northwest of the Bo Hong island range. Surrounding this island is a cluster of famous landmarks such as Sung Sot Cave, Luon Cave, Ti Top Island, Trong Cave, and Trinh Nu Cave.  

According to available records, Bo Nau is a floor cave with an area of up to 1,000 m2. The cave entrance features a gently curved arch resembling a giant inverted seashell. With this structure, the interior feels remarkably airy as it welcomes natural light. 

2 Legends and cultural significance of Bo Nau Cave

Bo Nau Cave holds deep cultural and historical values closely tied to the spiritual life of the people of Ha Long. Locals recount that this cave was once an ideal shelter for flocks of pelicans migrating south from the north to escape the winter cold. Hence, people referred to it as Bo Nong (Pelican) Cave, which gradually evolved into Bo Nau Cave over time.

In local folklore, this cave served as a hiding and sheltered place for warriors during historical defense efforts. Furthermore, the cave still preserves valuable archaeological relics from prehistoric humans. 

Local residents regard Bo Nau Cave as an invaluable gift bestowed by nature upon Quang Ninh. It stands as a symbol of peace, good fortune, and prosperity for this picturesque bay. 

3 What makes the landscape inside Bo Nau Cave special?

Upon entering Bo Nau Cave, visitors are instantly overwhelmed by a magnificent labyrinth of stalactites and stalagmites. Meticulously sculpted over millions of years of geological formation, these structures create an impressive subterranean landscape. 

The cave architecture is divided into two main chambers, each featuring unique characteristics. The cave ceiling is exceptionally high and gracefully vaulted, offering a grand sense of space reminiscent of a grand theater. 

Across the ceiling of Bo Nau Cave, countless sparkling stalactites hang down. They drape softly like silk curtains or clusters of brilliant crystal chandeliers. When sunlight streams through the entrance, interplay between light and shadow creates a vivid natural canvas. 

Toward the rear of the cave, three large, rugged stalagmites rise up prominently. Viewed from afar, their silhouettes resemble three elderly scholars huddling together in deep contemplation. Locals also liken them to celestial immortals descending to earth to play chess.

Bo Nau Cave is included in Sightseeing Route 2, one of the primary heritage itineraries in Ha Long Bay. This journey takes travelers past well-known attractions such as Ti Top Island, Sung Sot Cave, Luon Cave, Trong Cave, and Bo Nau Cave. Visitors can purchase shared day boat tickets for a 5-to-6-hour itinerary at the ports.
