One of the simplest ways to discover a different Ha Long is to: Don’t start the day in a tour vehicle. Start with a pair of walking shoes.
Hon Gai Beach is now a public space that attracts large numbers of residents and tourists; in August 2026, the area was also selected as the provincial venue for a community walking program, with tens of thousands of participants across Quang Ninh.
06:00 – walk instead of checking your phone
Morning is a good time to:
-
Walk.
-
Go for a light run.
-
Admire the sea.
-
Observe residents exercising.
-
See the city before the tourist traffic starts to build.
Don’t turn the experience into a photo session featuring local residents.
07:00 – have breakfast
One of the dishes most worth trying is steamed rice rolls with squid sausage. Official Quang Ninh sources consider Ha Long squid sausage one of the most prominent representatives of local cuisine; steamed rice rolls with squid sausage also frequently feature in Ha Long food-tour promotional activities. Instead of searching for the “No. 1 TikTok restaurant,” look for places that:
-
Have a menu.
-
Clearly display their prices.
-
Have a steady flow of customers.
-
Have a clean space.
-
Have many local customers.
Eating like a local doesn’t mean ordering a lot
One serving of steamed rice rolls with squid sausage is enough to understand the dish. If you like it, you can then buy some squid sausage to take home.
Don’t order three more types of seafood just because you think, “I’ve come to Ha Long, so I have to eat everything.”
08:00 – slow down over coffee
After breakfast, instead of immediately taking a taxi to an entertainment area, spend another 30–45 minutes sitting at a café or taking an additional walk. This is time that helps you see the city as a place where people live, rather than a collection of check-in spots.
If you want to extend the outing to half a day
You can combine: the seafront → breakfast → Ha Long 1 Market → Hong Gai Cultural Space.
But keep to a slow pace. Don’t turn a local morning into a “7 spots in 3 hours” tour.
A note about swimming in the morning
Just because you see local residents going into the water doesn’t mean you should swim at any stretch of the shore. Only use areas that are:
-
Designated for swimming.
-
Zoned.
-
Compliant with signage and rescue arrangements.
Quick checklist
-
Get up earlier than usual.
-
Walk instead of calling a vehicle.
-
Don’t take close-up photos of strangers without asking.
-
Try a local breakfast dish.
-
There’s no need to order many dishes.
-
Keep the volume moderate.
-
Swim only in designated areas.
-
Don’t try to “live like a local” by imitating behaviors you don’t understand.
