Three days and two nights are not enough to "explore all of Quang Ninh," but they are entirely sufficient to understand why this land is so special. For first-timers, the journey should revolve around its two most prominent highlights: Ha Long and Yen Tu.
Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago is a World Natural Heritage site, while the Yen Tu – Vinh Nghiem – Con Son, Kiep Bac complex was inscribed by UNESCO in 2025.
Day 1: Getting acquainted with Ha Long
Upon arriving in Ha Long, do not rush onto a boat. The first day should be used to "slow down": check in, have lunch, and explore the urban area. If you enjoy culture and history, you can spend time at the Quang Ninh Museum and the Hon Gai area. If you prefer a resort and entertainment atmosphere, Bai Chay is more convenient. The evening should be relatively open: enjoy seafood, take a stroll along the coast, or experience the growing night-time economy offerings in Ha Long.
Day 2: Dedicated entirely to Ha Long Bay
This is a day when you should not cram more into your schedule. Ha Long Bay's official website currently lists itineraries VHL1–VHL8 with different sets of experiences, ranging from classic caves and landmarks to eco-tourism, fishing village culture, and further-reaching routes. First-time visitors should choose an itinerary based on actual time spent on the bay and personal preferences, rather than merely relying on advertisements promising to "visit the most spots."
-
If you want caves and iconic landmarks, choose an itinerary featuring the classic spots.
-
If you prefer physical activities, look for a route that includes kayaking/bamboo boat rides or climbing to scenic viewpoints.
-
If peace and quiet are your priority, consider itineraries leaning toward areas farther from the center.
After returning, do not book a long-distance bus ride that very evening. A day on the boat, walking inside caves, and exposure to sun and wind is often more tiring than you think.
Day 3: Yen Tu
Depart early and spend half a day or nearly the entire day at Yen Tu, depending on your physical stamina. Notably, starting from 2026, Quang Ninh is waiving 100% of the sightseeing fee for the Yen Tu scenic landscape area until the end of 2028. This applies to the sightseeing fee; other services such as cable cars still require checking their separate price lists. You do not necessarily have to push yourself to reach the very top if traveling with young children or the elderly. The value of Yen Tu lies not only in Dong Pagoda, but also in the entire pilgrimage space, the mountain forests, and the system of historical relics along the way.
Plan B
If Day 2 has unfavorable weather for visiting the bay, swap Day 2 and Day 3 if operational conditions allow. This is precisely why a good itinerary is never "set in stone" down to the minute.
